| Lady Ann Of
Darlington Born in Cumbria (NW England) on 8th December 1955, Ann was to spend the formative years of her life in Darlington, County Durham (NE England), ironically only a short distance from the birthplace of David Coverdale. Following her graduation, aged 16, from the Education system and having a flair for languages, (more of which will surface later - she learned French and Spanish at school), Ann commenced working for the Local Government and gained an ONC in Public Administration. It was whilst working in this environment that Ann was tempted into the realms of marriage in 1976, although this was to only last 2½ years. Ann feels that she "entered into marriage on the rebound from another relationship" and, even thought she became a divorce statistic she and her husband parted amicably and she has no regrets. During this period, Ann moved from Local Government into Industry and became an employee of the large international firm Cummins Engineering. By 1985, love had reared its head once again and having started a relationship with a German national Ann took the plunge and decided to uproot from the North East of England, moving to Hamburg. As can be seen from Ann's profile on the David Coverdale BBS this move proved to be unsuccessful as, after just 4 weeks, her new partner decided that their relationship was not a good idea and Ann found herself on her own. In a rather 'headstrong' way Ann couldn't face going back to England and decided to make a go of her life in Germany. She immediately moved to Hannover, managed to convince a friend (whom she'd met on an exchange visit some years earlier) to allow her to stay at her flat and set about getting a job, which she did with the British Armed Forces at the Military Hospital. Ann also set about two challenges; getting accommodation in her own right and teaching herself the German language. Not being able to afford a 'self contained' apartment of her own she opted to flat-share with a man called Uwe who has ultimately become her boyfriend for the last 15 years. Ironically, the addition of a new member to the household (in this case a dog) caused a major upheaval to Ann and Uwe in 1990 as they soon discovered that the dog hated being left alone, causing some annoyance to neighbours. In order to keep the dog content someone would need to stay at home and, as two incomes were still necessary it was decided that Ann would start up her own business as a Translator, an occupation that she has continued successfully to this day. As for Whitesnake and David Coverdale? Ann's first memories of hearing the tones of Mr. C were in 1980 and the song "Long Way From Home". Ann recalls that she was having a relationship at the time and they "used to go for drives in the car and this song used to be played". It became one of her all time favourites and she became a huge Whitesnake fan. Unfortunately, it was not until 1988 that she saw Whitesnake for the first time (Birmingham NEC) during the 1987 tour although she'd had three previously failed attempts at Newcastle City Hall, all of which were cancelled. As any 'Lighthead' will know, Ann's interview with David during the "Into The Light" promotional tour has become one of the features of David's website. In the run-up to this interview Ann had attempted to secure a meeting with David on numerous occasions as she felt that this could be a useful exposure on one of the many unofficial Whitesnake websites that were around. As luck would have it, Ann went to see David and Whitesnake during the Restless Heart tour in Manchester and found herself booked into the same hotel as the band. Ann had a discussion with Adrian (Vandenburg) in Manchester and then managed to meet David and Michael in Hannover where they discussed the idea of a fan interview for later use. When David finally hit the UK to promote ITL Ann received a call from Michael and the rest, as they say, is now history. Today, Ann divides her time between Darlington and Hannover, running her business from both locations, thanks to the Internet. Ann's hobbies, apart from Whitesnake, include Hiking, Aerobics, Reading (as she puts it -mostly Thrillers) and Gardening. Steve Price August 2001 |
