Reviews in the News: Cookbooks for Everyone
Armchair cooks will want to add this number to their collection: Food That Rocks: Favorite Recipes from the Hottest Kitchen in Music by Margie Lapanjan and Cindy Coverdale (Conari, $24.95).
Coverdale, whose husband, David, is the lead singer of Whitesnake, asked some legends of modern music for their food preferences and to contribute a recipe to this collection. Part of the profits is earmarked for the charitable organization, Freedom from Hunger.
The eclectic recipes fall into wide categories: Signature Salads, Soups and Amped-Up Appetizers, Sizzlin' Sides and a Pasta Performance, Desserts Worthy of a Standing Ovation, and A Delicious Mix of Styles and Tastes (for those dishes that didn't quite fit anywhere else).
On the menu: Steak and Eggs from Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry; Grilled Sea Bass from ueber drummer Doug "Cosmo" Clifford; oatmeal from bass guitarist Tony Franklin; and Hot Rod Hot Dogs and Little Old Lady from Pasadena Chocolate Fudge Brownies from--who else--Jan and Dean.
Coverdale also asked contributors to name their special backstage food request. Spandau Ballet's lead singer, Tony Hadley, admitted his was "M&Ms . . . but with the brown ones removed!"
"Food That Rocks is interestingly organized and a lot of fun to read," states Monica Stark in January Magazine. "You wouldn't buy this one for the recipes alone" . . . but "where else are you likely to get cooking tips from Shania Twain, Billy Corgan, Sarah McLachlan, Charlie McGimsey, Adrian Vandenberg and Patti LaBelle all under the same covers?"
Bon appetit!--Judi Baxter
